Arthritis is a group of painful and degenerative conditions marked by inflammation in the joints that causes stiffness and pain. Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions surrounding arthritis. When it comes to arthritis it is important to remember that arthritis is not a single disease, in fact, there are over 100 types of arthritis and related rheumatic conditions. When people refer to arthritis they are usually referring to either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and is 10 times more common than rheumatoid arthritis. When a person suffers from osteoarthritis, the cartilage in their joints breaks down, causing their joints to swell and their bones to rub together. Treatments vary for different types of arthritis; therefore, it is very important to get an accurate diagnosis.

Common Misconceptions About Arthritis

You may have heard that arthritis only affects older individuals and that it only consists of minor aches and pains, however, both of these facts are untrue. Arthritis can affect anyone and can happen at any age. A lot of people believe arthritis simply consists of minor aches and pain that can be treated by over-the-counter pain relievers. The reality is that arthritis can consist of much more than minor aches and pains and can include the following:
Joint pain and damage
Limited range of motion (ROM)
Joint deformity
Inflammation
Fatigue
Function limitations

Ways to Prevent Arthritis

Age, body weight, genetics, and joint usage, are all factors that play a role in determining whether or not a person will develop osteoarthritis. If you are overweight, losing weight is one of the best ways to decrease your chances of developing osteoarthritis. Extra weight puts more pressure on your joints - especially your knees and hips. Regular exercise is also a good idea as it will help maintain flexibility in your joints.

How to Treat Arthritis

Acupuncture, an ancient Chinese medical treatment that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body, is recognized by the World Health Organization as an effective treatment for pain caused by arthritis. Supplements can also be used to treat arthritis. Both fish oil and turmeric supplements have been proven to help reduce pain and inflammation caused by arthritis. Fish oil supplements, which contain high amounts Omega-3s have been shown to reduce joint stiffness and pain. Curcumin, a key chemical in turmeric, has been shown to reduce pain, inflammation, and stiffness related to rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. People who suffer from arthritis should also consider seeing a physiotherapist. Physiotherapists have many different tools and methods that they can use to treat arthritis and other joint issues.
